In this video I show you how to check the resistance and current draw of a glow plug using a Volt meter and a amp clamp meter.

Tools you will need:
Digital Volt Meter (DVOM) https://amzn.to/2qkMJFm (affiliate link)

If using a DVOM you can only perform the resistance test which will still detect most problems with glow plugs. Turn your meter on and attach the black lead of your volt meter connected to a good ground on the engine like the valve cover, the intake or some other metal part of the engine and then touch the red lead of the volt meter to the top each glow plug and record the value of each one. Normal resistance depends on the year,make,model and sometimes the emissions code of the vehicle but most will range between .05 and 1.5 ohms. All of the glow plugs you test on your vehicle should be within 10% of each other. If any are more than 10% higher or lower then you should replace all glow plugs because the others may be close behind.

If you have an amp clamp then you can do the above test 1st and then do the current test. Some glow plugs only show a problem after they have power applied and start to warm up. You will need a jumper wire attached to the positive battery post and your amp clamp placed around the wire. Now just like before touch the other end of the jumper wire to the top of each glow plug and wait 10-15 second while watching the current draw. The amp clamp will show a higher reading when first hooked up but will begin drop right away. The reading will level out after 10-15 seconds if the plug is self regulated and working properly. Compare the initial amperage between all glow plugs and the amperage after 10-15 seconds. Use the 10% from above.
