Today my topic is session, connection, sockets, and ephemeral port numbers.
In the TCP/IP world, any single connection between two computers is a session. Session and connection are interchangeable in general, though technically, a connection means medium linked for communication while a session refers to the process of the communication between two systems.

One side’s session information is called a socket or endpoint.
Two sides’ session information is socket pairs or endpoints.
A socket is the combination of an IP address and a port number.  TCP/UDP applications utilize sockets to communicate with one another.

servers use well-known port numbers, and they are reserved and long-lived port numbers.  Clients use dynamic/private port numbers. They are short-lived and temporary.  That is why it is also called ephemeral port numbers.
