We hear about sin a
We hear about sin a lot in the Bible and within the Church, but what is a sin? What is the meaning and definition of sin?
According to the Catechism of the Catholic Church (CCC, 1849-1851), sin is:
an offense against reason, truth, and right conscience
Every human being is imbued with the gift of a conscience. We naturally know right from wrong and must act according to that conscience with our own free will. To sin is to act contrary to the truth of our conscience.
2. an offense against God
Sin is disobedience against God compared to Christ’s obedience.
According to St. Augustine, sin is a “word, deed, or desire in opposition to the eternal Law of God.”
Like Adam and Eve in the Garden of Eden, when we sin we choose to be like gods knowing what we think is good or evil. It is a love of one’s self above God and others.
Put simply, sin separates.
Sin separates us from God and from our neighbor. This is the end and consequence of sin.
Jesus Christ is the way of salvation from sin. Through the Savior, we are reunited in mercy with God and with each other.
In life we become the slaves of sin, but Jesus offers freedom from sin through salvation.
Every offense against God and truth can be forgiven by God through his abundant mercy.
