Best Hikes in Patagonia - Perito Moreno Glacier (2020)

Patagonia hiking in the Perito Moreno Glacier sector of Los Glaciares National Park in Argentina. A network of elevated metal walkways provides hikers with close encounters with the blue face of the Perito Moreno Glacier as is descends from the Southern Patagonian Icefield (Campo de Hielo Sur).
The glacier was named after the 19th century scientist and explorer Francisco Moreno ("perito" is a title meaning "specialist" or "expert").

The snout of the Perito Moreno Glacier periodically abuts itself against the Magallanes Peninsula essentially forming an "ice dam" that separates the water in one of the arms of Lago Argentino (the Brazo Rico) from the main body of the lake. The level of the water in the Brazo Rico then rises until the ice dam can no longer contain the pressure of the impounded water. This results in a rupture of the ice dam in which the water from the Brazo Rico rushes suddenly into the main body of Lago Argentino.
