Using a 7448 BDC - 7 Segment Decoder to simplify driving seven segment displays with the Arduino

Driving a four digit 7 segment display using the Arduino without using any support chips requires the use of ELEVEN of the Arduino's I/O pins, leaving precious few pins for anything else.  Using a 7448 BDC - 7 Segment Decoder in conjunction with a 74HC595 Shift Register lowers the I/O pin count to THREE, and greatly simplifies the code necessary as well.
