When we place a floating object in a liquid, the object displaces an amount of the liquid that is equal to the weight of the object. It follows that a heavier object should displace more liquid than a lighter one. To see this we take a container of water with a scale taped to its side. Measure the level of water before and after adding boat to the container. You will see that the level increases after the boat is placed in the container. When we add a stone to the boat, the level of water goes up again. Thus, we see that as weight increases, the amount of water displaced also increases.
