These are relatives of our
These are relatives of our California turret spiders, but larger.
I don't know what I thought their behavior would be in reaction to "fishing", but was hoping one would stay out so I could get a photo. Our local tarantulas and Calisogas tend to grab onto the grass and keep holding on when done right (no poking/jabbing/harassment involved), slowly coming out partially or fully. Some of our local euctenizids have held on also.
But the two I tried this with were of the pounce-and-retreat persuasion, like most of the turret spiders we've tried to coax out. I guess I shouldn't have been surprised at that.
Last year in this area, I found numerous very small juvenile burrows.
After the past winter's rains and heavy snow (which there was still quite a bit of north of there), I hoped they'd be alright. This year, I found four adult burrows, with more than twenty juvenile burrows, as well as another area with juveniles.
