The Tail of the Dragon and the Cherohala Skyway are two very popular scenic roads in the mountains of western North Carolina and eastern Tennessee.  Each is famous for being amazing driving routes and this video explores the vertical alignment or the changes in the elevation along each road.

The Cherohala Skyway is a much newer road, completed in 1996, though it took decades to complete and is a national scenic byway.

The Cherohala Skyway has more gentle curves and better views with a lot of scenic overlooks, but the Tail of the Dragon is more famous for its sharp and constant horizontal curves.

The skyway is longer at over 40 miles, while the official Tail of the Dragon route is 11 miles with 318 curves.

Overall, the skyway has a total elevation gain of 5,557 feet and an elevation drop of 7,320 feet.

The tail of the dragon has a total elevation gain of 718 feet and an elevation drop of 1786 feet.

If you've been on either or both of these roads, please let me know in the comments about your experience and if you have any favorite places on those roads.
