What did Kazimierz look like in Krakow in 1910? How many people lived in the example buildings? Who were they?
*****************************************
Kazimierz was founded in 1335 by King Casimir the Great. From its foundation until the very beginning of the 19th century, it was a separate city located south of Krakow. From 1495, in the area of Kazimierz, or more precisely - the former village of Bawół - Jews settled there during the reign of King Jan Olbracht, and this is how a Jewish town was established - "oppidum iudaeorum". The most important street in the Jewish district was Szeroka Street. It is worth knowing that before the outbreak of World War II, about 80% of Krakow's Jews lived in Kazimierz. They were mainly Orthodox and poor Jews.
In the film, we show colored photos depicting scenes from the life of Kazimierz in 1910 and the appearance of tenement houses at that time, juxtaposed with the contemporary face of one of the most frequently visited districts of Krakow, which is the former Jewish district.
