Four months after the Berlin Wall is built, a KGB officer manages to flee to the United States. For fifty years, nobody but intelligence officers will ever see his face. His name is Anatoliy Golitsyn. To his CIA interrogators, the "defector" claims that Soviet agents have infiltrated the NATO countries' secret services.

What's more, he claims that numerous moles are operating at the heart of the SDECE, the powerhouse of French espionage, and that there are several others among General de Gaulle's own entourage. Golitsyn even gives this network a name: Sapphire. The President of the United States himself is so worried by this information that he decides to warn his French counterpart.
