Is it better to invest in the USA or India? This is a common dilemma for people on visas in the US (H1B/F1/L1). This video goes over all the different factors that need to be considered and tells you what the best option is based on data. Enjoy!

Currency exchange rates are the first thing to consider. In 2011, 1 USD was worth 45 INR but in 2021, that same 1 USD is worth 72 INR. This means that investments made in India back then declined in value over time.
Inflation is another major factor - US inflation average is around 2% Vs. India's 5%. This means that we should not consider returns purely at face value. Eg. just because an Indian bank is giving 5.5% interest rate Vs. US bank's rate of 0.5%, it does not mean that it is better.
When comparing the two stock markets, Dow has outperformed Sensexthe last 10 years with an annual growth of 10.87% Vs. Sensex's 9.55%. This gap becomes even wider when you adjust for rupee devaluation. The volatility in the Indian markets is also higher meaning it comes with an added risk
According to me, the bottom line is that you should invest in India only if you know that you will eventually be going back. Otherwise, it is better to keep all your investments in the US itself. Many US companies are worldwide giving some level of international exposure.
If you want to diversify further, there are ETFs like Vanguard Emerging Market ETF (VWO) and iShares (INDY) ETF that can give you more exposure to the Indian markets.
