Bānat Su'ād

He is Ka'b son of Zuhair son of Abu Sulma and the name of Abu Sulma: Rabee'ah son of Riyāh, one of the Banu Muzainah, son of Udd son of Tābikhah son of Ilyās son of Mudar. His father and himself were from the distinguished poets of their time. Their encampment was in the lands of Ghatafān. For this reason people think they are from Ghatafān, but this is wrong. They are from Muzainah. The evidence for this is the saying of Ka'b: هم الأصل مني حيث كنت وإنني ** من المزنيين المضيفين للكرم The context of this poem is that he was in mortal danger, with a death sentence on his head because he satizired the prophet; the qasīdah is presented as part of a ceremony of submission and declaration of allegiance; in both, the qasīdah plays a role in the redemption of the poet. He recited this poem in front of Muhammad after embracing Islam. Muhammad was so moved that he removed his mantle and wrapped it over him. Metre: Basīt Notes: 3:53 The word تحليل 'tahleel' is from حلّل اليَمِينَ which means 'He expiated the oath'. 4:08 The word الكور is supposed to be القور 4:10 'they having already sweated' metaphor for intense warm weather. 4:26 The first waw الواو is connected to وقد تلفع بالقور العساقيل. 4:35 Meaning: As if the swiftness of the camel's arms in trotting were the arms of women slapping themselves by reason of having lost their children.
