Is Pool Water pH Important?

From https://www.swimmingpoolsteve.com/pag... - The pH level in swimming pool water needs to be balanced along with the other chemicals to keep the water clean and comfortable for swimming but also to protect the pool from the potential of long term damage from adverse water chemistry.  If the pH level is too high or to low, it can have effects on swimmers, pool equipment and the pool itself.  Having the pH at 7.4, or neutral, is the ideal level for swimming pool water for both bather comfort but also for pursuing a neutral saturation index score.  For the average pool owner the question about the importance of pH management tends to come up because it is a struggle to keep the pH level in the correct range.  If the pH level is not balanced and is too high, scale is more likely to form as well as cause skin issues with swimmers such as dry, red or itchy skin.  Too low and the water is acidic and this can also cause issues for both the pool equipment as well as sensitive swimmers who might be in the pool.  Borates are something to consider using if you have chronic pH issues.  These act as a secondary buffer for pH and alkalinity movement and help stabilize the pH level.  If you struggle to keep your pH where it should be, understanding the relationship between pH and alkalinity is important, and then exploring borates at 30 to 50ppm to help stabilize your alkalinity and pH levels would be a good idea.
