Information from both Russian state and private media sources indicates that the shipbuilding company Sevmash is planning to unveil the Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear submarine K564 Arkhangelsk in December. It's important to note, however, that this information has not been officially confirmed at this time.

Of particular interest amid these speculations is the revelation that the Russian military-industrial complex is reportedly constructing five Yasen-M Project 885M submarines. While these developments may not initially seem directly related to the ongoing Russia-Ukraine conflict, they do provide insights into Russia's defense budget, which is projected to exceed 5.6 trillion rubles, approximately $62 billion, in 2023.

The Project 885M Yasen-M nuclear submarines appear to be formidable based on declared features. Each submarine in this class boasts impressive specifications, including water displacement capabilities of up to 8,600 tons on the surface and up to 13,000 tons underwater. They have diameters and lengths of approximately 13 and 130 meters respectively, and can achieve speeds of 16 knots on the surface, increasing to 31 knots underwater, with autonomy for up to 100 days.
With a crew of 64, these submarines are heavily armed, featuring 10 torpedo tubes capable of housing 30 torpedoes, along with 8 launch cells capable of accommodating 4 Onyx missiles or 5 Kalibr missiles each. In essence, each submarine can carry up to 32 Onyx missiles or up to 40 Kalibr missiles.

The cost of these submarines is a matter of debate in the public domain, with suggestions that each submarine may start from 41 billion rubles (US$455 million). However, considering the cost estimation methods of the Russian Ministry of Defense, which deemed a destroyed Askold corvette in Kerch as 10 times cheaper than a new Tu-160M, assigning each Yasen-M submarine a price tag of 0.5 billion dollars may not be an exaggeration.

It is intriguing that despite engaging in land warfare, Russia continues to invest significantly in its navy, a sector known for its resource-intensive nature. This raises questions about how Russia manages its defense budget amid the ongoing conflict in Ukraine and numerous international economic sanctions.

On the flip side, the construction of the five Yasen-M submarines in progress may contribute to inflating Russia's military budget, potentially creating a misleading perception of the country's defense expenditure.
