The Sheep Sketchbook was created in February 1972, when the artist was preparing for his retrospective exhibition in Florence. While seeking peace and quiet in a room overlooking fields where local sheep grazed, he began drawing them. At first, he saw them as mere "four-legged balls of wool", but as he studied them, he discovered their true essence, their movements and shapes.
