This is a detailed tutorial (+ slow-motion) on how to knit a yarn over purlwise. A yarn over counts as a knitting increase and you can use it to add stitches to your knitting. It's a very popular stitch for lace patterns and has no slant (almost all other knitting increases are either leaning to the right or the left).
Step 1: Wrap the yarn around the needle counter-clockwise
Step 2: Bring the yarn to the wrong and secure the wrap with your index finger
Step 3: Continue with your knitting pattern (you may want to secure the wrap with your index finger before you continue)
So, the yarn over purlwise is basically the exact same technique as a normal yarn over. The only difference is that you are using it on the wrong side. Also, the wrap is a bit easier to slide off when purling the next stitch.
Take extra care and note that the next (purl) stitch is not part of the yarn over. It's only the wrap.
