In 1993, Grand Seiko launched the 9F thermo compensated quartz caliber, and it moved the bar for manufacturers of luxury watches with precision quartz calibers. Reborn for 2018 as a three-piece collection of 9F caliber tribute watches, the legendary Grand Seiko precision quartz caliber celebrates its 25th anniversary in style!
This 2018 Grand Seiko GMT Sport Collection SBGN001 is a chronometer grade watch with a second time zone and a hand-selected quartz crystal for extreme precision. While standard Grand Seiko 9F calibers are accurate to +/- 10 seconds per year, the SBGN001 GMT is accurate to +/- 5 seconds per year by virtue of its unique quartz oscillator.
Additional features of this in-house Grand Seiko movement are nine jewels and a precise jump date that changes precisely at midnight. Both the basic 9F86 movement and the cam-based date mechanism are built and tuned by Grand Seiko watchmakers. A power reserve of three years ensures that this luxury watch is ideal for watch buyers who tend to rotate though many watches and expect that a given timepiece might sit for an extended period.
Grand Seiko's GMT Sport Collection 9F 25th anniversary watch is water resistant to 100 meters and features a screw down crown for additional security. The caliber 9F86 is the first ever 9F quartz GMT from Grand Seiko, but it retains many of the signature refinements of the core 9F movement. Thermo compensation is present to prevent variations in temperature from affecting the precision of the watch; a manual quartz trimmer -- as on the Rolex Oysterquartz -- allows a watchmaker to compensate for quartz crystal drift over time. A double-pulse stepper motor permits graceful hour and minute hands while conserving battery power, and a lash adjustment system perfectly aligns the seconds hand to its index after each jump.
Externally, this stainless steels Grand Seiko GMT Sport Collection SBGN001 is a 39mm timepiece with a full bracelet, 24-hour bezel, and a secure deployant clasp.
The Grand Seiko GMT Sport Collection Limited Edition is encased in 39mm of stainless steel surrounding a black dial on a stainless steel bracelet. Functions include hours, minutes, seconds, date, and GMT. The watch also measures 12.1mm in thickness and 45.5mm from lug-to-lug.
