Rod end ball joints (also called Heim joints) are used in applications where three degrees of rotational freedom are needed. They are typically heavy duty items (metal construction) and rated to withstand thousands of pounds of load. The interface between the ball and its socket is usually snug: this is beneficial because it eliminates any play at the interface; however, if the application calls for very low friction in the joint it will generally loosen up over time.
