Virginia Commonwealth University's Department of Nurse Anesthesia offers a 3,000 square-foot Center for Research in Human Simulation. Visitors often mistake it for a real operating room, but behind the two-way mirror of the control room, student registered nurse anesthetists are trained to handle both routine and unexpected situations that can arise in the OR. Not only does simulation training teach students standard anesthesia administration, the space also offers simulators for current CRNAs, where we offer hands-on training of advanced anesthesia procedures (such as ultrasound) as well as training for critical and unplanned crises. The simulation lab is overseen by Michael Kammerman, BS, EMT-P (Ret.) CHSE. Mr. Kammerman joined the Department of Nurse Anesthesia in 2009 from the VCU Health Emergency Department where he served as the Simulation / Weapons of Mass Destruction technician. His interests include patient safety, high fidelity human patient simulation technologies, simulation research, and task trainer development.
