With the merger of Sterling Cooper and PPL imminent, Duck Phillips had confined in Pete that he plans to undermine Don or have him fired otherwise. However, as a great signal of trust, Pete informs Don of Duck’s plans.
One season earlier, Pete had tried to blackmail Don into giving him a promotion. Pete’s plan backfired and Don could have had him fired. He did not and Bert Cooper gave him the wisdom that “one never knows how loyalty is born”.
