The act of carrying objects over a distance is one of our most “functional” and fundamental lifting patterns. They are also one of our favorite ways to increase general work capacity, conditioning and mental tenacity. Another bonus outside of the training effects (increase in abdominal wall strength/endurance, grip strength, upper back strength, etc) is that Loaded carries are a self limiting exercise. This means that these exercise don’t allow for an extreme amount of cheating or body English. So when the grip or core fails, the implement is usually dropped. This requires the individual to become more mindful of their posture, breathing, and total coordination of the body during movement.
