Granada TV highlights, with commentary provided by Gerald Sinstadt, of a crucial Second Division encounter between Bolton Wanderers and Wolves on 14th May 1977. An impressive attendance of 35,603 were present at Burnden Park to see Wolves, who had won the title the previous week following a draw at home to Chelsea, deny Bolton in their pursuit of promotion.

Wolves, to the surprise of many at the club, had been relegated the previous season and were aiming to return to the top flight under the guidance of manager Sammy Chung. Throughout the season, Chung relied greatly on a number of experienced and familiar players at Wolves. The likes of Derek Parkin, Frank Munro, Kenny Hibbitt, John McAlle, Mike Bailey and John Richards had all been with the club since the 1960s and they would, with the exception of Bailey (who appeared just 10 times that season), form the core of the Wolves team. In addition, Geoff Palmer, Steve Daley and Alan Sunderland were familiar faces from a few years or so previously, while Bobby Gould returned for a successful second spell at the club. Steve Kindon added further experience and midfielder Willie Carr had been signed by Chung's predecessor Bill McGarry in March 1975. Collectively, they helped ensure the promotion of Wolves as 1976-77 Second Division champions.

Wolves, with Gary Pierce an ever-present in goal, had statistically the second best defence in Division Two and were leading scorers in the division with an impressive 84 goals for the season - largely shared out between top scorer Kenny Hibbitt, with 18 league goals, Alan Sunderland (16), John Richards (15), Steve Daley (13) and Bobby Gould (10 goals in just 11 games). Martin Patching and Colin Brazier were the youthful additions to the Wolves team for the match against Bolton. It was Brazier's second appearance of his fledgling Wolves career and he partnered Frank Munro at the heart of the Wolves defence. In contrast to Brazier, the match at Burnden Park represented the final Wolves appearance for Munro in a highly distinguished near-decade long career at Molineux.

Prior to their match against Wolves, Bolton were 4th in the league, 2 points behind Nottingham Forest but with 2 matches in hand over Brian Clough's team. For the match against Wolves, manager Ian Greaves was reliant upon the goal scoring prowess of Neil Whatmore (who ended the season with an impressive 25 goals in the league), the skilled wing play from former Manchester United and Scotland international Willie Morgan and the rugged defending from boyhood Wolves fan Sam Allardyce.
