A star-delta (Y-Δ) connection is
A star-delta (Y-Δ) connection is a common method of connecting three-phase electrical motors. It is also known as a "wye-delta" connection. This type of connection allows the motor to be started in a low-voltage, high-current configuration, and then switched to a high-voltage, low-current configuration for operation.
In a star-delta connection, the three-phase motor windings are connected in two stages. Initially, the windings are connected in a star configuration, which means that all three windings are connected together at one point, while the other ends of the windings are connected to the three-phase power supply. This connection allows the motor to start with low current and high torque.
Once the motor has reached a certain speed, typically around 80% of its rated speed, the windings are switched to a delta configuration. In this configuration, the windings are reconnected so that the ends are connected to each other in a series, while the other ends remain connected to the three-phase power supply.
