Dr. Aviva Ben-Ur,

Historians have verified that slavery has been present in every known society. The Hebrew Bible and ancient rabbinical sources provide among the oldest surviving evidence of this institution and practice. This course reviews the main biblical and rabbinical texts relevant to slavery. Which elements of slavery in those sources are common to human societies throughout the world? By contrast, which elements are specific to Jewish thought and experience? Do the Hebrew Bible and Jewish sources condemn slavery or accept it as a God-ordained way of ordering the world? Are biblical and rabbinical sources a reflection of lived reality, or are they metaphors intended to impart spiritual lessons? Why do observant Jews insist on calling their ancestors and themselves “slaves” rather than “enslaved people?” The survival of slavery through the present day means that these questions are still relevant, both spiritually and politically.
