(26 Jan 2019) MINDY KALING MINES HER PAST FOR SUNDANCE COMEDY 'LATE NIGHT'
Mindy Kaling mined her past experience in "The Office" writing room and leading "The Mindy Project" to make her movie "Late Night."
Kaling stars in and wrote the workplace comedy, which premiered on Friday (25 JANUARY) at the Sundance Film Festival in Park City, Utah.
"First of all, it's just a super funny comedy – workplace comedy movie. But there's themes of feminism and nepotism and ambition, particularly for young people. But I think the main thing about this movie is that it's really a movie about being a fan," Kaling said.
"Like, I've been such a comedy nerd my whole life and I've always felt like on the outside looking in. I had no connections in the business, but I just loved comedy and watched it every night – late-night talk shows. So the movie is just really a love letter for people who are fans of something and really want to be part of it, but don't feel like they have any access."
In the movie, Emma Thompson plays a late-night talk show host who hires Kaling's character to add diversity to her writing room -- but ends up getting much more.
"There's certainly aspects of this movie that I have pulled from from my own experience being a new writer and actually being the head of a show and having employees. Like both my character and Emma's character - I've experienced like a little bit of both," Kaling siad.
Kaling said she was proud to be part of the Sundance festival's push for diversity in the film industry.
"It's kind of just reflecting what people want to see. You know, having people behind the camera and in front of the camera who don't look like all of the people you've always seen is just I think important. Now there's so many different choices and I feel like we are finally being heard. So it's nice," she said.
"Late Night," which also stars Amy Ryan and Reid Scott, is seeking a distributor at the festival, which runs through Feb. 3.
