You are able to build the H25 robot arm (designed for the education set) with the retail 31313 set without additional components. You just have to do some minor changes.
a) Since the T-shaped parts that are used to build the grab are missing in the 31313 set you have to use the U-shaped part to hold the gears. It perfectly fits in the original design and I think this is even a better solution ;)
In the official set inventory there is only one of the small "Conical Wheel Z12" (small bevel gear) and one "Bevel Gear Z20" (the bigger one). Since my set contained two of the smaller bevel gears I show you two alternatives in the first 4 still images of the video. The first was build with the small and the larger gear. The second uses two small gears. (You need to add a yellow spacer (1/2 bush) to "lift up" the small gear.)
b) The part to bild the rotating base is missing too. Just use one of the H-shaped connectors with two of the small wheels. If you add the tires it gains stability.
c) The small and big gears used in the edu-version are missing. That´s not a problem since the gears in the 31313 set do fit in place without altering the design.
d) You need an axle with length 10 that is missing in the 31313 set. Just put 2 axles of length 5 into the motor from both sides ;)
e) There are some other parts missing or the beams you have in the 31313 set are too long. Just take a beam that is 1 or 2 holes longer as long as it doesn't block the movement of the robot arm.
I wasn´t able to use the color sensor to control the movement of the arm. It seems in some light conditions the black part istn´t recognized well. You can cover the part with white paper to improve this behaviour. ;)
