Zamboanga (Full Movie 1937)

An early "talkie" filmed in the Philippines, it was also released with the title "Fury in Paradise" and distributed internationally. (https://www.imdb.com/title/tt0167505/) This copy was provided by Nick Deocampo of the U.P. Film Institute after the original film was repatriated from Finland to the U.S. Library of Congress. Subtitles on the film are Finnish and Swedish. Director Eduardo de Castro would use his experience as actor in "Brides of Sulu" and introduce a young and fit Fernando Poe in the lead role.  The success of this film would help launch what has been called the "Golden Age" of pre- and post-war Philippine movie-making and the establishing of local studios. Search author "Nick Deocampo" on Amazon for his many film history books. Of particular note are the underwater scenes filmed before the invention of SCUBA using 16mm cameras that were hand-cranked.  Cinematographer, William H. Jansen, ASC, was a pioneer and continued to work on Philippine films through the 1950s.
