Many temples were made in India in the Gupta period, from the 4th to the 6th centuries CE. However, most were made of brick and have not survived intact. The earliest large body of well-preserved structural temples is of the period of the Early Chalukyas from the 6th to the 8th centuries. These were made near the banks of the Malaprabha River in present-day Karnataka and on the Tungabhadra River in Andhra Pradesh. The most important sites are at Pattadakal, Aihole, Alampur and Badami.

On the walls of these early temples, we find an exquisite quality of art. Sublime deities are made, to transport us and to take us away from our material concerns, to a world of peace and joy.
