Discover the vital mineral potassium! Learn about the signs, symptoms, causes of low potassium, and how to address it.

SUMMARY:
Potassium is a mineral that helps keep the fluid in our cells balanced. Potassium affects our blood pressure. Higher potassium intake lowers our blood pressure. Researchers think this could be because potassium relaxes blood vessels and causes them to get rid of excess sodium.

A lot of fresh fruits and vegetables are high in potassium. Fresh and dried fruits, beans and lentils, leafy greens, fish, nuts and vegetables.

Hypokalemia is the medical term for low potassium. Some signs and symptoms of hypokalemia are fatigue, muscle cramps, constipation and irregular heart rhythm. The most common cause is just not getting enough potassium in your diet. Eating an excessive amount of processed foods, which are usually also high in sodium, are very low in potassium. Drinking a lot of alcohol is also a cause, as well as taking diuretic medications. People can even get hypokalemia if they experience excessive sweating or vomiting from an illness like the flu or a stomach bug.

Adult males should consume 3,400mg per day and adult females about 2,600mg.
