STORYLINE
The court hearing of five suspects, arrested in the brutal gang rape and killing of a young woman on a New Delhi bus, ended quickly on Thursday, after it turned out some of the official court paperwork listing the charges was illegible.
Thursday's hearing had been expected to result in the case being sent to a special "fast-track" court.
But much of the work of the hearing had to be postponed until Monday, after lawyers found that some of the official paperwork was not legible.
Manohar Lal Sharma, the lawyer representing one of the suspects, appeared to be preparing a defence based, in part, on the many problems with the legal and judicial system.
Sharma spoke to reporters outside a New Delhi court complex on Thursday.
Sharma had said he was representing three of the suspects, bus driver Ram Singh, Singh's brother Mukesh, and another man, Akshay Thakur, but the court eventually approved him to serve as the lawyer only for Mukesh Singh.
"The lawyers who will be representing the accused has been finalised by the magistrate. Each accused has got a lawyer to defend him. I am appearing on behalf of Mukesh. He is a 22-year-old kid," he said.
Other lawyers were assigned to three other suspects, and it was not immediately clear why the fifth had no assigned lawyer.
Ajay Prakash Singh, the lawyer representing two of the suspects said his clients had difficulty understanding the charge sheet.
"Hindi is our mother tongue. Accused want the charge sheet (to be) supplied in Hindi. It is a very important topic. They want the charge sheet for themselves in Hindi," he said, adding that they will plead not guilty.
