Lesson - 23: Subnetting Bonus Examples

In this video, we will discuss some examples of Subnetting!

Subnetting Examples:

Question 1: How many subnets and hosts per subnet can you get from the network 192.168.190.0.255.255.255.252?
Solution:
First, convert the subnet mask to slash (/) value
Subnet Mask        = 192.168.190.0.255.255.255.252
255.255.255.252 = 8 8 8 6
8+8+8+6               = 30
Slash (/) Value     =  192.168.190.0/30
To find the host we have to consider that whenever the Subnet mask is 30 then the number of hosts will be 22.
Host  = 22
Formula:
Number of hosts           = 2(number of host bit)
Total number of host    = 22
Host IPs                          = 4 (All these host IPs are not usable)
Usable Host IPs            = 2
Now, calculating the total number of Subnets:
This network (192.168.190.0.255.255.255.252) belongs to Class C it means by default the slash is /24 but we are using /30. By default, the number of hosts if we use /24 is 254 but now we have only 2 hosts it means we have to divide the big network into small networks.
Here we are borrowing 6 bits so the number of subnets is (26 = 64).
So, the answer to the question is, that we will be dividing this network into 64 subnets and in every subnet, there will be 2 hosts.
Answer: 64 Subnets & 2 Hosts

Question 2: The network address of 172.16.0.0/19 provides how many subnets and hosts?
Options:
7 subnets, 30 hosts each
8 subnets,190 hosts each
8 subnets, 2,046 hosts each
7 subnets, 2,046 hosts each
Answer: 2) 8 Subnets, 8,190 Host Each

Question 3: What is the subnet number of a host with an IP address of 172.16.66.0/21?
Options:
172.16.36.0
172.16.48.0
172.16.64.0
172.16.0.0
Answer: 3) 172.16.64.0

Question 4: You have an interface on a router with the IP address of 192.168.192.10/29. Including the router interface, how many hosts can have IP addresses on the LAN attached to the router interface?
Options:
6
4
2
1
Answer: 4) 6

Question 5: You need to subnet a network that has 5 subnets, each with at least 16 hosts. Which classful subnet mask would you see?
Options:
255.255.255.192
255.255.255.224
255.255.255.240
255.255.255.248
Answer: 5) 255.255.255.248

Question 6: On a VLSM network, which mask should you use on point-to-point WAN links in order to reduce the waste of IP addresses?
Options:
/27
/28
/29
/30
Answer: 6) /30
