Pink Floyd performed live in Venice for the only time in history on July 15, 1989, as part of their A Momentary Lapse of Reason Tour, their first tour without bassist Roger Waters, who was replaced by Guy Pratt. There was a lot of controversy surrounding the show, as many locals believed that the concert would have a negative impact on the city, as the noise levels would damage the monuments in the city. To combat these fears, the band agreed to lower the volume to 60 decibels, play a shortened setlist, and perform on a barge in the Gran Canal. However, the local government refused to provide portable toilets or rubbish bins, so the city was left with a decidedly 'after party' look, with rubbish everywhere. As a consequence, most of the local government resigned, including Venice's mayor (who was opposed to the concert but was outvoted).
