Hindu nationalist leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee was named prime minister of India on Sunday.

The announcement has put an end to two weeks of political uncertainty after an election which resulted in a hung parliament.

Seventy three year old Vajpayee, who heads the Bharatiya Janata Party (B-J-P), is due to be sworn in on Thursday.

However, he must win a parliamentary vote of confidence by March 29, or resign.

The weeks of uncertainty are now over for India.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was summoned to the mansion of India's President K.R. Narayanan in New Delhi on Sunday where he was officially asked to be the country's next prime minister.

After the meeting, he read the letter from the President formally inviting him to take office to reporters gathered outside.

SOUNDBITE: (English)
"Atal Bihari Vajpayee, I have pleasure to appoint you prime minister, and request you to advise me as to the names of others to be appointed as members of the council of ministers.  I propose to administer the oaths of office and secrecy on Thursday, 19th March 1998 in the forenoon.  I advise you to secure a vote of confidence in the Lok Sabha, within ten days of being sworn in."

The appointment was made just hours after Vajpayee's Hindu nationalist B-J-P party summoned up the extra parliamentary support it needed for a coalition.

J. Jayalalitha, the leader of the southern bloc agreed to join the B-J-P in government, after Vajpayee agreed to make concessions to her party.

Jayalalitha had earlier threatened to withhold her support from the B-J-P altogether, which could have scrubbed the Hindu party's chances.

The B-J-P had already toned down its Hindu rhetoric to appeal to some moderate allies.
The decision by the bloc of southern parties may give the fragile government a sense of stability that India has lacked for two politically turbulent years.

However, Vajpayee still has to undergo a parliamentary vote of confidence by March 29.

If he fails to win a majority, he must resign, as he did in 1996 after just 13 days in office.
