A senior member of the government in Afghanistan announced on Wednesday that he would not be supporting President Hamid Karzai in his re-election campaign.

Mohammed Fahim, a powerful warlord who acts as Karzai's deputy and defence minister, said he woud be supporting Mr Qanoni, an opponent of Karzai.

The decision follows earlier rumours that Fahim would resign to support a rival in the October 9 presidential vote, and follows President Hamid Karzai's announcement ten days ago that he was dropping Fahim from his election team.

But an aide said Fahim intended to remain in his Cabinet post until the formation of the next government.
