Interfaith America is working to promote our nation’s religious and spiritual diversity as an asset in quality healthcare and lever for building health equity.

Across the health care landscape, health workers at every level suffer from burnout, moral injury, and a sense of disconnection from the human dimension of care. Join the Chaplaincy Innovation Lab and Interfaith America for a second conversation in a series of webinars designed to highlight the positive potential of engaging diverse religious, spiritual, and philosophical traditions in health-related settings. This episode will consider the health worker crisis by exploring how they, as well as those who support them, can draw on that diversity of spiritual, religious, and philosophical grounding to strengthen resilience.

Dr. Jessi Gold is the inaugural Chief Wellness Officer for the University of Tennessee (UT) System and an associate professor of psychiatry at the University of Tennessee Health Science Center (UTHSC).

Dr. Gold works clinically as an outpatient psychiatrist and focuses her work on students, faculty, and healthcare workers.

She has spoken at major national and international meetings across diverse settings, from academic institutions to hospital systems to the entertainment industry. She has written research and academic publications in JAMA, the American Journal of Psychiatry, and elsewhere and has been identified by Becker’s Hospital Review as one of the ‘Top 14 Chief Wellness Officers to Get to Know | 2024′.

She may be best known, however, for her general audience original publications that teach about mental health topics and decrease stigma that can be found in, among others, the Washington Post, New York Times, Forbes, SELF, and InStyle, as well as her expert media appearances in print, television, radio, and podcasts, and her large social media presence.

During medical school, it became evident to Pallavi Tatapudy that psychiatry was not a choice but a calling. Drawing parallels to the natural fit between the revered figures in Hindu mythology, Lord Hanuman and Lord Rama, she found inspiration in the field’s emphasis on effective communication, mutual respect, and unconditional positive regard.  As a lifelong student of Vedanta, a philosophical and spiritual tradition within Hinduism, Pallavi’s journey was shaped by teachings from Vivekananda Vidyapith in Wayne, New Jersey. The institution instilled the essence of scriptures, Hindu philosophy, and culture. The pillars of prayer, service, and respect became integral to her profession.  “Psychiatry and my involvement in diversity, equity, inclusion, access, belonging, and justice are ways I express myself,” Tatapudy shares. Inspired by the intersection of interfaith work and health, she continues to explore creative expressions like poetry and dance to understand and process patient experiences. Her interfaith journey is not just a professional path but a vocation to foster unity and inspire others.
