For the 2022 Asian Art Circle Presents program, the Guggenheim hosted the premiere of a newly commissioned performance by Sin Wai Kin. Conceived specifically for the museum’s Peter B. Lewis Theater space, "the story changes the body changes (repeating)" continues the artist’s exploration of storytelling as a means to interrogate binaries, in this case between reality and fiction. Drawing on traditional roles in Cantonese opera, along with contemporary drag performance as embodied speculative fiction, the narrative unfolds through circular dialogue between two characters: “The Storyteller,” Sin’s iconic personification of the universe as a newscaster, and “Change,” a brand new being who made their debut at the program. The performance examines how by crafting fantasy it is possible to manifest new realities.
