Europe has been fasting from Russian gas since the outbreak of the war between Russia and Ukraine and the disruption of the flow of Russian gas to Europe due to several reasons, including Russia's retaliation against the European Union for its unconditional support of Ukraine in its war against the Russian army and Wagner forces. Therefore, Europe is looking towards Africa to fill the growing natural gas gap since February 2022. However, how will this be achieved?
It is well known that Algeria is the world's tenth-largest producer of natural gas and one of the top five exporters of liquefied natural gas to Europe. Algeria has expressed its readiness to increase its gas exports to Europe to compensate for the shortage of Russian gas.
On the other side of North Africa, Egypt recorded the largest annual growth in gas exports in 2022, according to a report by the Organization of Arab Petroleum Exporting Countries (OAPEC). Therefore, several countries have been vying to secure Egyptian gas, including Turkey, Spain, and China, since the beginning of the first quarter of 2022.
