During Cambodia's dry season, the fishing village of Kampong Phluk sits not far from the shores of the Tonle Sap Lake. During the summer, however, as monsoon rains fall on Southeast Asia and snow melts on the Tibetan Plateau, flood waters course their way down the Mekong River. So great is the flow, the the Tonle Sap River, a tributary of the Mekong, reverses the direction of flow, channeling excess flood waters into the Tonle Sap Lake, The water level in the lake rises as much as ten meters, and lakeside villages like Kampong Phluk find themselves atop the lake rather than al its edge. Buildings ten meters above ground level in the dry season find water lapping at their doorsteps in November, at the end of the rainy season, when I filmed this video.
