Black locust, white oak, white pine... this is some of the best wood for boatbuilding, and we're lucky to have so much of it available here in Massachusetts to build this boat with. Six years ago, when we started building this boat, Steve made his best guess about how much he would need to season to have it ready for these final days, and we've been careful about wood selection for a good long time knowing that we can't just go and harvest more. It would take two years before it's ready to build with.
The toe rail is going to be of quarter-sawn white oak instead of locust, which will work wonderfully. The deck gets bunged, decisions are made about the cockpit footwell and the placement of all that needs to live there, and we visit the Newport Boat Show. Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond—sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.
