Constipation is a common digestive disorder characterized by infrequent bowel movements or difficulty in passing stools. It occurs when the movement of stool through the colon (large intestine) becomes slow or sluggish, resulting in the stool becoming hard, dry, and difficult to eliminate. The typical frequency of bowel movements varies from person to person, but generally, having fewer than three bowel movements per week is considered a sign of constipation. However, it's important to note that some individuals may have a regular pattern of bowel movements that is less frequent than others without experiencing any discomfort or symptoms. Why does constipation happen? Several factors can contribute to the development of constipation, including: · Inadequate fiber intake · Insufficient fluid intake · Lack of physical activity · Certain medications · Medical conditions · Ignoring the urge to have a bowel movement Causes can also be blockages in the colon or rectum, neurological problems in the nerves of the colon and rectum, lack of coordination in the muscles, Weak pelvic muscles and Hormonal imbalances also lead to constipation.
