The magpie shrike, also known as the African long-tailed shrike, is a passerine bird of the shrike family, Laniidae.

Description
It is named for its magpie-like appearance: pied plumage and a long tail. Its plumage is mostly black with white markings on the wings and shoulders. Females have white flanks. It has dark eyes, a small, black bill, and dark, gray-black legs and feet.

Vocalizations: Call and song
They are vocal birds. The common call is a shrill, strident screech, often given in small flocks.

Distribution and range
Magpie shrikes are native to eastern and southeastern Africa.

Habitat
They inhabit grasslands, savannah, open woodlands, and shrublands.

Diet and feeding habits
Their diet comprises insects and other arthropods. They also eat small lizards, small rodents, and fruit.

Nesting and breeding
Magpie shrikes are cooperative breeders. The breeding pair has several helpers.

They nest in thorny trees. The cup-shaped nest is made of grass, twigs, and rootlets and lined with softer materials. Females lay 3 to 5 eggs and the incubation period lasts roughly 20 days. The young remain dependent on parental care for up to 8 weeks.

Status and conservation
Although fairly common, Magpie shrikes are declining in parts of their range due to habitat degradation. They are currently evaluated as “least concern” by the IUCN.
