In this tutorial we will understand what is meant by the perimeter of a rectangle.
Then, we will determine the formula to calculate perimeter and solve a question.

The perimeter of a rectangle is the distance around it.

The sides of a rectangle are called length and breadth. The longer side is the length.

If we lay the sides of this rectangle next to each other, then the perimeter of this rectangle would be its length + breadth + length + breadth

Or, if we simplify this equation then we see that the perimeter of a rectangle is 2 times the sum of its length and breadth.

So that’s the formula to calculate the perimeter of a rectangle.

Let’s see an example now.

Here is a rectangle whose sides are 6 cm and 4 cm.

What will be its perimeter?

The perimeter of this rectangle would be 2 times 6 cm + 4 cm or 20 cm
