In IEEE 1588 v2, the Best Master Clock Algorithm (BMCA) ensures that there is only one grandmaster in a network.  In this self-configuring algorithm, every clock advertises its level of accuracy.  The ones that are identified to have the best accuracy are selected and the other ones go from advertising mode to listen mode.  The selected master clocks will negotiate between each other to choose the Grand Master Clock.  The remaining selected best master clocks will go in a standby state and monitor the chosen Grand Master Clock for accuracy.  If any issue happens, one of the other master clocks will take over.

The clock priority for becoming the grand master can also be configured (it is part of the advertisement).  The lowest prioriy clock automatically becomes the Grand Master.

Transparent clocks can either be one-step clocks (newer) or two-step clocks.  One step clocks takes the sync follow up message step out for synchronization for more efficiency.  One-step clocks and two-step clocks can technically interoperate.
