Afghanistan is renowned for its beautiful hand-woven carpets, especially in the northern province of Balkh. Most carpets are woven at home by women and girls, often in difficult conditions. In the township of Qaleen Bafan (which literally translates as “Carpet Weaver”), home to many former refugees and displaced Afghans, there is hope as UNHCR nears completion of a new carpet processing and weaving centre, which will create new jobs, help families earn more money for their finished products and provide a safer and healthier environment for carpet weavers.
