A mother orangutan would never willingly part with her baby, and so it is highly likely that the babies in our care were removed from the wild and ended up in captivity.

We can never replace their mothers, but the expert vets and carers do everything they can to give them the best chance of survival that they possibly can.

In the wild, orangutan babies stay with their mothers for up to seven years. During this time, they are taught the essential skills needed to survive in the rainforest. Many of the orangutans that IAR Indonesia and BKSDA rescue are just months old, it is heartbreaking to think that such a precious bond has been broken while they are still so young. We are committed to rescuing these orphaned babies.
