This shows how the compression release on a Kohler Command CV15 in a Sears Craftsman lawn tractor works.
At cranking speed, an additional lobe on the exhaust side of the camshaft partially opens the exhaust valve at the beginning of the compression stroke to effectively reduce the compression ratio, which makes it easier to crank over. As soon as the engine fires and speeds up slightly, the additional lobe moves out of the way and the exhaust valve works conventionally.
