Coronavirus cases in Malaysia hit a record high of over 24,500 daily new cases on August 26, 2021. Despite a state of emergency declared in January 2021 and a total lockdown in June 2021, the cases continued rising.
A Malaysian doctor who spoke to CNA’s #Insight programme on condition of anonymity revealed that “most wards are full and there’s literally no space to create new COVID wards.” He added: “More tragic is the amount of patients we have to watch die because we don’t have the resources, equipment or manpower to deal”.
Hospitals in Malaysia, especially in the Klang Valley, were so overwhelmed that they resorted to measures like sharing oxygen lines, converting parking lots to emergency units, and even storing bodies in special containers.
Many have pointed out that the lockdown measures, while causing economic pain, were not strict enough, allowing for certain industries to continue operations. There were also reports of Malaysians who crossed state borders to visit family members during the Hari Raya festivities despite restricted travel measures.
On July 27, it was revealed that emergency ordinances to fight COVID-19 had been revoked a week earlier without royal consent. The King’s public rebuke sparked calls for former Prime Minister’s Muhyiddin’s resignation. He resigned on August 27, 2021.
