Welcome to today’s edition of the OpEx Minute, presented by EMS Consulting Group.  Today we will be talking about Total Productive Maintenance or TPM.
Often an overlooked component of a lean manufacturing program, proper equipment maintenance is key to lean manufacturing success. Continuous flow manufacturing will not allow for frequent, unplanned equipment down-time. TPM is an excellent method for meeting the demands continuous flow manufacturing places on equipment. It is a team-based approach to improving equipment availability and performance. TPM focuses on the following:
1. It increases Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) using improvement activities.  Overall Equipment Effectiveness includes 3 components:
a. availability of the equipment – is it available to run when we need it, or do we have issues with downtime?
b. Performance of the equipment – when it is running, is it producing the expected output based on specifications?
c. Quality- what is the yield or quality rate of the product coming off the equipment?
2. It reduces the so-called “Big Six Equipment Losses.”  These include
a. Breakdown losses
b. Setup and adjustment Losses
c. Idling and minor stoppage losses
d. Speed losses
e. Quality defects and rework
f. Start-up/yield losses (reduced yield between machine start-up and stable production)
3. It establishes an autonomous maintenance program performed by equipment operators.  Autonomous maintenance includes restoration of equipment, training of operators, and a systematic team-based approach to preventive maintenance and equipment-related problem solving.
This results in an increase in operational stability.  Note that TPM falls under the Operational Stability foundation of the TPS house.  If our equipment is performing consistently, it makes it much easier for us to work toward just in time with built in quality.  On the other hand, if the equipment is performing poorly, it can throw the proverbial wrench into the works!
