The Uyghurs are an ethnic minority group who primarily live in the East Turkistan - Uyghuriye ( Xinjiang province of China now ) eastern Kazakhstan, and Uzbekistan. Uyghur music is diverse and has commonalities with Islamic Modal Music, Turkic-Mongolic Traditional Music and South Asian Music music. Unlike much Central Asian music, Uyghur music is occasionally pentatonic and polyphonic.
One main form is the muqâm modal song suite, divided into the four regional styles of onikki/twelve, dolan, turpan, and qumul muqâm. The muqâm begins with an unmetered introduction, and then moves through several lyrical transitions and modulations, strongly influenced by the maqam and dastgah systems of Arabic and Persian Classical Music. In the Ili region, nakhshe is a common short song suite, unrelated to muqam, characterized by simple one and two beat rhythms.
Common instruments include the dutâr, tanbur and rawap (long-necked lutes), ghijak (spike fiddle), transverse flute, and the dap (frame drum).
