When caring for those who may suffer from some form of dementia, it is important to have security measures in place to prevent possible elopements.
Of course we highly recommend you have security cameras and alarm systems, but there are more creative security measures you might want to take as an adult day owner!
Part of working with seniors, especially those who may suffer from dementia and are exit seeking, is reducing elopement risks. While not everyone is an elopement risk, here are a few ways to better prepare.
(1) Frosted Glass - Exterior windows can become a distraction. Often times those who suffer from more advanced stages of dementia may seek exterior windows, which can lead to additional confusion and frustration.
If you add frosted tint to the glass, this can reduce their stress and anxiety. It still allows for light to come in, but members cannot see outside. This helps them focus on our activities instead of looking for their loved one in the parking lot.
(2) Transition Room - We also learned that having some sort of lobby/transition area that is separate from the activity area helps minimize elopement risks by creating additional separation from the activity area and the front door.
Having a separate door (that shuts automatically) and is separate from our front door greatly reduced the amount of foot traffic near the front door especially in the afternoon when sundowning is more common.
These additional security measures have made a world of difference for us. We hope these will help you too!
